About the Sales Tax Calculator

Sales tax in the United States is set at the state and local level, so the rate you pay ranges from zero (in states like Oregon, New Hampshire, Montana, Delaware and Alaska) to over 10% in some cities once state, county and city taxes stack. The AlarmDaddy Sales Tax Calculator works both ways — add tax to a pre-tax price, or back out the tax from a tax-included total.

Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove tax, and set your local combined sales-tax rate. The calculator shows the pre-tax price, the tax amount, and the total. It is handy for shoppers checking a receipt, freelancers and small sellers pricing goods, and anyone reconciling an invoice where only the total is known.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Enter the amount.
  2. 2Choose Add tax (from a pre-tax price) or Remove tax (from a total).
  3. 3Set your local combined sales-tax rate.
  4. 4Read the pre-tax price, tax amount, and total.

The formula

Tax = price × rate%. To remove: pre-tax = total × 100 / (100 + rate).

Adding tax multiplies the pre-tax price by the rate. Removing tax from a tax-inclusive total divides by (100 + rate) and multiplies by 100 to recover the original price, then the difference is the tax.

Frequently asked questions

Five states have no statewide sales tax: Oregon, New Hampshire, Montana, Delaware and Alaska (Alaska allows local sales taxes). Everywhere else, combine the state rate with county and city rates for your true rate.
