About the Data Storage Converter

File sizes, bandwidth and storage are quoted in a confusing mix of decimal (KB, MB, GB) and binary (KiB, MiB, GiB) units, which is why a "1 TB" drive shows less space in your operating system. The AlarmDaddy Data Storage Converter switches between bit, byte, kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte and their binary counterparts.

Enter a value, choose the units, and read the result with every unit at once — useful for sizing downloads, backups and data plans.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Enter the data size value.
  2. 2Choose the unit to convert from.
  3. 3Choose the unit to convert to.
  4. 4Read the result and the all-units table.

The formula

result = value × (factor_from ÷ factor_to), where each factor is the unit's size in bytes.

Decimal units are powers of 1000 (1 KB = 1000 B, 1 MB = 1,000,000 B) while binary units are powers of 1024 (1 KiB = 1024 B, 1 MiB = 1,048,576 B). Both are defined in bytes here so you can convert between the two systems.

Frequently asked questions

Drives are sold in decimal terabytes (10¹² bytes) but operating systems often display binary gibibytes (2³⁰ bytes). 1 TB ÷ 1.0737 ≈ 931 GiB — the storage is there, just counted differently.
