How to use this calculator
- 1Select your EV from the searchable car dropdown, or choose "Other / Custom EV" and enter the battery capacity manually.
- 2Enter your local electricity rate in ₹ per unit (1 unit = 1 kWh). Home rates in India typically range from ₹3 to ₹12 depending on the state and slab.
- 3Enter your average driving efficiency in km/kWh as shown on your EV’s dashboard or trip computer.
- 4Adjust the charging loss percentage if needed (default 10%). Home AC chargers lose 8–15%; DC fast chargers may lose 5–10%.
- 5Optionally change the starting and ending battery percentages to calculate the range and cost for a specific charge window.
- 6Read the results: estimated full range, range per 1%, cost per 1%, cost per km, full charge cost, and the cost for your selected battery window.

The formula
The calculator uses seven core formulas. Full battery range is simply battery capacity multiplied by efficiency (km per kWh). Cost per kilometre divides the electricity rate by efficiency. To account for charging losses — the electricity consumed between the meter and the battery that never reaches the cells — the calculator divides the usable energy by (1 minus the loss percentage) before multiplying by the rate. For example, with a 79 kWh battery, ₹6/unit rate, and 10% loss, the grid draws 79 ÷ 0.90 = 87.78 kWh, costing ₹526.67 instead of ₹474. The selected-range section uses the same formulas but over the chosen battery slice (e.g. 80% of 79 kWh = 63.2 kWh usable).
