About the Fraction Comparison Calculator

The AlarmDaddy Fraction Comparison Calculator tells you at a glance whether one fraction is greater than, less than, or equal to another. Enter two fractions and it compares them by cross-multiplication and also shows each as a decimal so you can see why.

It is a quick helper for maths homework, cooking measurements and any time two fractions are hard to compare by eye — like 3/4 versus 5/7.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Enter the first fraction (numerator and denominator).
  2. 2Enter the second fraction.
  3. 3Read which is greater, and each fraction as a decimal.

The formula

Compare a/b and c/d by cross-multiplying: a×d vs c×b.

To compare two fractions without finding a common denominator, cross-multiply: a/b is greater than c/d exactly when a×d is greater than c×b (for positive denominators). The calculator also converts each fraction to a decimal for confirmation.
